VT05 Lonnie Lee - The Black and White Television Years Volume 1

One of the most popular stars of the Black and White days of Television Lonnie Lee, presents clips of some of his appearances on shows such as Six O'Clock Rock, Bandstand, Teen Time, Saturday Date, Sing Sing Sing, The Johnny O'Keefe Show and many others.

The ABC TV’s Six O’Clock Rock show which ran from Feb 1959 to July 1962 was originally modelled after the BBC’s  6/05 Special, however after a few episodes it was totally turned into a full on Rock’n’Roll show compeered by Johnny O’Keefe. It was the first live music show to be aired nationally and today only a few clips survive. It’s so called rival ‘Bandstand’ on TCN 9 and the 9 network, lasted into the 70’s however it was a mimed show recorded before the actual show went to air, and was much more aimed at a family young adult audience. Mild mannered newsreader Brian Henderson compeered this show.

To confirm the television popularity of Lonnie lee we cite below..

In the only public voting contest run by the ABC to find the most popular star on Six O’Clock Rock, Lonnie  even beat Johnny O’Keefe who came second.

A similar contest was held by the magazine Chuckler’s Weekly to find the most popular on Bandstand and Lonnie came second to Col Joye who was the resident male star.

The days of Black and White have long gone but now you can experience the innocence and newness all again whilst you watch the young Lonnie Lee and dancers from 1959 to the mid 60’s, so many years ago.

All songs are full versions.
